Smiley Faces - Comedy (2004) - Drug Related

Jane is stoned...really stoned after eating about 8 weed laced cupcakes. Unfortunately, she has a number of things scheduled to do: go on an audition (she is an actress), get some cash from the ATM to pay her dread-locked drug dealer (Adam Brody), get the stuff to replace her room mate's cupcakes...and on and on. Along the way Jane gets hold of the original manuscript of Karl Marx's "Communist Manifesto" and tries to sell it...or more to the point she mostly carries it around with her on her journey through the streets of Southern California trying to avoid the police. How she got possession of said manuscript should have been funny but isn't...btw. Director Gregg Araki, who should have known better, directs the film at arms length as the script and most of the actors try to be ironic and fun but most of the time, it all falls flat though Anna Faris as Jane is fun, strange, disconnected as she usually is in most of her films. After his masterful "Mysterious Skin" I'm guessing that Araki needed a change of pace...but why this limp washrag of a druggie comedy? And why now when he should be writing the screenplay and directing the 2009 version of Anna Karenina?
